“J.S.Bach”, by Albert Schweitzer (1966)

This edition, in two volumes (New York, Dover, 1966), is a republication of the work originally published in english by Breitkopf and Hartel (1911), after the french (1905) and german (1908) editions.
Albert Schweitzer was a great musicologist; his book is one of the great full-lenght studies of the composer; it has probably been more quoted than any other and is among the definitive reference works on Bach.
The first volume contains a virtual history of Protestant church music and a full account of Bach’s life.
The second volume is concerned with Bach’s choral music. Schweitzer analyses the choral works and makes recommendations for performance.
